Google Pay introduces Aadhaar-based UPI registration, enabling users to set up their UPI PIN without a debit card. This new feature promotes financial inclusion and offers greater convenience for users. Learn how it works and which banks support Aadhaar-based UPI activation.

Google Pay has recently rolled out a new feature that allows users to register for UPI (Unified Payments Interface) using their Aadhaar credentials, eliminating the need for a debit card. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has facilitated this feature to enhance user convenience and promote financial inclusion.

To initiate the Aadhaar-based UPI registration process on Google Pay, users can choose between a debit card or Aadhaar as their preferred method. Opting for Aadhaar requires entering the first six digits of their Aadhaar number. The next step involves authenticating the process through One-Time Passwords (OTPs) received from UIDAI and their respective banks. Once the authentication is complete, users can set their UPI PIN.

To ensure a smooth onboarding process, users must ensure that their phone number registered with UIDAI matches the one registered with their bank and that their bank account is linked to Aadhaar. This verification process safeguards users' Aadhaar numbers. Google Pay acts as a facilitator by securely sharing the Aadhaar number with NPCI for validation, without storing any personal information.

Aadhaar-based UPI activation is supported by various banks, including Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, IndusInd Bank, UCO Bank, and more. Leveraging the extensive coverage of Aadhaar, which is widely used by over 99.9% of India's adult population, Google Pay aims to extend UPI services to a larger user base and foster financial inclusion.

Once users have completed the Aadhaar-based UPI activation, they can seamlessly perform transactions and check their balance using the Google Pay app. This feature significantly enhances accessibility and convenience in digital payments across the country, aligning with the Indian government's vision of a digital and cashless economy.

In summary, Google Pay's introduction of Aadhaar-based UPI registration eliminates the need for a debit card during the setup process, offering greater convenience to users. This initiative promotes financial inclusion and supports the widespread adoption of digital payment solutions throughout India.
